The verdict
A category rather than a single product, because the makers worth buying from are mostly small and the specification matters more than the name. Two things decide whether this lasts: solid sterling or gold rather than plate, and stones held in prongs rather than glue. Both fail visibly within a year if you get them wrong, and both are why the same-looking pendant costs $38 or $130.
What we liked
- Reads as a plain, well-made pendant until someone asks
- Solid metal takes daily wear without tarnishing or wearing through
- Prong-set stones stay put where glued ones do not
- A pendant is unaffected by weight change, unlike a ring

- Below about $100 you are usually buying plate and glue
- Multi-stone orders commonly run to six weeks — order early
- Standard spring clasps are genuinely hard with arthritic fingers
What it is like to live with
The trick with birthstone jewellery is restraint. Most of it announces itself — oversized stones, novelty settings, a design that only makes sense once explained. What works is a pendant that looks like a good pendant, where the meaning is private to whoever is wearing it.
One accessory worth buying alongside: a magnetic clasp converter, about $12. A standard spring ring is small and stiff, and for a recipient over seventy it is the difference between a necklace worn daily and one that stays in a box because fastening it alone is too fiddly.
