Johnstons of Elgin cashmere wrap review

Johnstons of Elgin

Scottish-milled cashmere, and the best unwrapping moment of anything in this archive.

The verdict

Designed, woven and finished in Scottish mills, and it feels like it. This is the reference point for the category — the thing cheaper wraps are trying to approximate. What you are paying for over a direct-to-consumer blend is provenance, weave quality and a finish that holds its shape. Cashmere still pills at friction points by month five, at any price, and no maker will tell you that.

What we liked

  • Woven and finished in Scotland, with the finish to show for it
  • Warm without bulk — works over a coat or indoors
  • The best presentation of anything in this archive
  • Holds its shape better than cheaper cashmere

What we did not

  • Several times the price of a merino-cashmere blend with similar warmth
  • Pills at the shoulder by month five, as all cashmere does
  • Hand wash only, and no repair service offered

What it is like to live with

The two questions with any cashmere are ply and provenance. Single-ply is routinely sold at two-ply prices and goes limp within a season, so the weight in the hand tells you more than the label does. Johnstons is one of the few names where the mill and the process are genuinely part of what you are buying.

Whether that is worth the difference over a Quince blend depends entirely on the recipient. For someone who notices where things are made, it is. For someone who wants to be warm on a sofa, the blend does the same job for a third of the money.
