The verdict
A category where presentation is most of the purchase and one specification decides quality: whether the stopper actually seals. Most sets under about $80 do not, and the contents evaporate over months. Look for lead-free crystal, a ground-glass stopper, and two heavy-bottomed glasses — two being the right number for an anniversary and the wrong number for a dinner party.
What we liked
- A genuinely excellent unwrapping moment
- Lead-free crystal has real weight in the hand
- A properly ground stopper prevents evaporation
- Presentation boxes in this category are usually worth keeping
What we did not
- Below about $80 the stopper generally does not seal
- Hand wash only, and narrow necks are awkward to dry
- Replacement glasses are rarely sold separately
- A gift for an occasion rather than an object that improves a week
What it is like to live with
Decanters are one of the few gifts where the functional test is simple and most products fail it. A stopper either seals or it does not; if it does not, the contents are noticeably diminished within a few months and the object becomes decorative.
Everything else here is presentation, and presentation is a legitimate reason to buy something. Just be clear-eyed that this is a gift for a day rather than something that changes a week.
How we tested it
A buying guide rather than a single product review. The sealing test and lead-free crystal specification are the quality markers consistently identified in this category.
