The verdict
Two specifications separate a set that becomes an heirloom from one that becomes clutter: solid hardwood rather than veneer, and weighted, felted pieces rather than hollow ones. The reason to spend here is not the chess. It is that a beautiful board left out gets used and a folding vinyl one in a cupboard does not, and what you are buying is the afternoons that follow.
What we liked
- Solid hardwood ages properly where veneer lifts and chips
- Weighted, felted pieces sit and move without rattling
- Doubles as an object on a side table, so it stays out
- Good makers sell replacement pieces individually
What we did not
- Expensive for a game — realistically a joint family gift
- Only works if somebody actually plays
- Untreated hardwood marks if a cup is set on it
- Sets at this size rarely have storage drawers
What it is like to live with
A category rather than a brand, because the good boards come from many small workshops and the specification travels better than any name. Check that the board is solid rather than veneered — the edge grain tells you — and pick the pieces up: weighted ones have obvious heft and a felt base.
The reason this sits high on our lists for older recipients has nothing to do with the game itself. It is that it creates an occasion which needs two people, and that is a rarer thing to be able to buy than it sounds.
