Kindle Paperwhite review

Amazon

The bigger page and the longer battery, with advertisements you should pay to remove.

Tested by The GiftsVerdict team

The verdict

A 7-inch screen holds a paragraph together at 200 per cent font size in a way the 6-inch Kobo cannot, and stated battery life runs to around twelve weeks. Buy it if the recipient already has an Amazon library, because that transfers and nothing else on this page outweighs it. Pay the extra to remove the lock-screen advertisements — handing someone a present with adverts on it is a false economy.

What we liked

  • 7-inch screen keeps paragraphs intact at large font sizes
  • Up to around twelve weeks of stated battery life
  • Existing Amazon purchases work immediately
  • The most polished reading software in the category

What we did not

  • $149 with lock-screen advertisements, $169 without
  • Library borrowing routes through Amazon and takes more setting up than Kobo
  • Sideloading EPUB is possible but fiddly

What it is like to live with

For anyone whose reading has become tiring, an e-reader is one of the most useful gifts on this site, because the type scales up and the page stays lit. The choice between the two leaders comes down to one question: does the recipient buy books or borrow them?

Buyers should take the Kindle. Borrowers should take the Kobo, whose built-in library support makes the whole thing three taps instead of a project. Whichever you choose, set up the account and load three books before wrapping it — a device handed over empty is homework.
