The verdict
For anyone whose reading has become an effort, an e-reader is one of the most genuinely useful gifts on this site, and this is the one we would give. Built-in OverDrive support makes borrowing from a public library the path of least resistance rather than a project, it handles EPUB natively, and there are no lock-screen advertisements at any price. It is smaller than a Kindle Paperwhite and that is the real trade.
What we liked
- Built-in library borrowing through OverDrive — direct rather than a setup project
- No advertisements at any price, unlike the $149 Kindle
- Native EPUB support for anyone with a non-Amazon library
- Lighter than the Paperwhite and easier to hold one-handed
What we did not
- A 6-inch screen holds fewer words at large font sizes than the Kindle’s 7-inch
- Library availability depends on country, library and title — confirm before buying on that basis
- An existing Amazon book library does not transfer
What it is like to live with
The feature that matters for the readers we write for is not the screen or the battery. It is that the type scales up without the page falling apart, and that borrowing a library book takes three taps rather than an afternoon with a grandchild. Kobo does the second of those better than anything else at the price.
The absence of advertising deserves saying out loud. Amazon charges $149 for a Paperwhite with lock-screen adverts and $169 without, and handing someone a present that shows them advertising is a strange thing to do. Kobo simply does not have the tier.
The honest counter-argument is size. At 200 per cent font a 7-inch page keeps a paragraph together better than a 6-inch one, and for someone with genuinely poor eyesight that matters. If they already own Kindle books, buy the Kindle and pay the extra to remove the adverts.
