The verdict
The right machine for someone who wants coffee rather than a hobby. It works the morning it is unwrapped, needs nothing beyond occasional descaling, and produces the same drink every time. The cost is in the capsules: around $1.10 a cup against 30 to 50 cents in beans, which over two years of daily drinking makes the cheap machine the expensive habit.

What it is like to live with
The case for capsules is convenience and it is a real case. There is no grind to dial in, no fortnight of bad shots, no clean-down, and the drink is identical every morning. For a gift that has to work on the day it is opened, nothing else in coffee competes.
The case against is arithmetic. At roughly $1.10 a cup against 30 to 50 cents for beans, a daily drinker spends the price difference between this and a Breville Bambino inside about two years, and then keeps spending it. If the recipient drinks two coffees a day, the sums stop being close.
So the honest advice is to work out which person you are buying for before you look at machines. One coffee a day and no interest in the process: buy this. Two a day and an existing habit of queuing at a café with resentment: buy the bean machine, and budget another $120 for the grinder it assumes you own.
