The verdict
The most capable noise-cancelling headphones you can buy, with twelve microphones cancelling marginally more than the Bose across the frequency range and up to 40 hours of battery against their 24. Sony has also brought back foldability, which the previous generation dropped. The reason it is not a clean sweep: Bose remains the more comfortable pair over long wear, and for anyone in glasses or hearing aids that is the round that decides it.
What we liked
- Twelve microphones cancelling slightly more than the nearest rival at both ends of the range
- Up to 40 hours of battery — charge it on a Sunday and forget it
- Folds again, which the previous generation did not
- Physical controls rather than pure touch gestures
What we did not
- Around $449, and last year’s model does most of this for considerably less
- Less comfortable over long wear than the Bose, particularly over glasses
- A bass-forward signature that suits pop better than classical or spoken word
What it is like to live with
Two numbers separate these from everything else: twelve microphones feeding a dedicated cancelling processor, and up to forty hours between charges. On a long flight both matter, and the difference between forty and twenty-four hours is the difference between charging before a trip and charging during one.
The return of folding is a bigger deal than it sounds. The previous generation dropped it and the case grew accordingly; anyone carrying these in a handbag rather than a rucksack noticed immediately.
Where they lose is comfort. Bose builds the better headband and the gentler clamp, and over three hours that compounds in a way no specification captures. If the recipient wears glasses or hearing aids, try both before spending $449 — and if they only use headphones occasionally, the previous generation at a discount is the sensible purchase.
