The verdict
One of the best gifts on this site for someone who is home a lot, because it produces several small events a day and something they can forward to a daughter. Birdfy earns the recommendation over the better-known Bird Buddy on money rather than hardware: a lifetime AI recognition option at roughly $49 to $69 removes the recurring charge, where a monthly Pro plan elsewhere can reach several hundred over five years.

What it is like to live with
The gift here is not the feeder, it is the notifications. Several times a day something lands, the camera fires, and a photograph arrives with the species named. For someone whose day is quiet, that is a small event with a picture attached, and it flows outward — the photographs get forwarded, which gives a housebound person something to offer a conversation rather than only receive one.
Where Birdfy beats the better-known Bird Buddy is the subscription. AI identification is the entire point of these feeders, and paying $4.99 to $9.99 a month for it indefinitely turns a $200 feeder into a far more expensive object. A lifetime option at $49 to $69 settles it once. If you do buy Bird Buddy instead, buy the PRO Solar model, which includes identification without a subscription.
Two practical warnings. Wifi has to reach the end of the garden, which is where most disappointment comes from. And the setup is a twenty-minute job that belongs to whoever is giving it — install it on a visit, not by posting a box.
