Aura Carver review

Aura

The sharpest screen in the category, in a frame that reads as furniture rather than a gadget.

The verdict

The best-looking digital frame you can buy and the one we would give, provided the recipient has reliable broadband. At 1920 x 1200 across 10.1 inches it is visibly sharper than the Skylight, and the matte finish survives sitting opposite a window. The catch is that it leans on the cloud, so a poor connection is a real problem — and there is a subscription tier, from around $3.35 a month, whose absence from the base experience you should check before buying.

What we liked

  • 1920 x 1200 across 10.1 inches — visibly sharper than the obvious rival
  • Reads as a picture frame rather than a screen, so it gets left out on a sideboard
  • The whole family send photographs from their own phones once it is set up
  • Frequently discounted well below list, including at warehouse retailers

What we did not

  • Relies on cloud storage, so unreliable wifi is a genuine problem
  • A subscription tier exists from around $3.35 a month — check what the base product does without it
  • Set-up is the giver’s job; handed over in the box it becomes homework

What it is like to live with

The reason to spend on a frame rather than print photographs is that other people can keep feeding it. Once it is configured and the family are added as senders, pictures simply appear and the recipient never touches a setting. That is the whole product, and Aura executes it better than anyone.

The screen is where the money goes. At 1920 x 1200 faces hold up at close range in a way the cheaper frames do not, and the matte finish means it can sit opposite a window without becoming a mirror. It also looks like an object rather than a device, which is why it ends up in a living room instead of a spare bedroom.

Two cautions. It depends on a continuous connection, so for a rural recipient or anyone with temperamental broadband the Skylight is the better buy despite the softer screen. And check the current subscription terms — this category has been steadily moving features behind paid tiers, and what was included last year may not be this year.
