The verdict
The specification that matters is full-grain rather than corrected or bonded leather: full grain ages into the shape of a hand, the cheaper grades peel. The second is refill availability and price — a cover you can slide a finished volume out of and shelve, with the same cover carrying on, is what separates a journal used for a decade from a notebook filled once.

- Strong leather smell for the first month
- "Genuine leather" on a label usually means a lower grade than full-grain
- Most have no pen loop, and embossing adds cost and lead time
What it is like to live with
A category rather than a brand, because the good makers here are small and regional and the specification travels better than any name. Full-grain, sewn or strap-bound, refills in stock at a sensible price. Those three things account for almost all the difference between a journal that lasts and one that does not.
One thing worth doing before wrapping it: write on the first page. A blank journal is stationery; a journal with a letter in the front is a gift, and it removes the small paralysis of spoiling something nice.
