Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolour set review

Winsor & Newton

Real pigment at a beginner price, in a tin that doubles as a palette.

Tested by The GiftsVerdict team

Boston, Massachusetts · September 2026

The verdict

The standard recommendation for anyone starting or returning to watercolour, and deservedly so. Cotman is Winsor & Newton’s student range — genuine pigment rather than dye, which is the difference between colours that mix cleanly and colours that turn grey. Muddy colour is what convinces beginners they have no talent, so this specification matters more here than anywhere else.

What we liked

  • Genuine pigment — colours mix without muddying
  • Refillable pans sold individually
  • The tin doubles as a mixing palette
  • Under $50, from a maker with a long history

What we did not

  • No paper included — add a cold-press pad, about $12
  • Student grade rather than the artist-grade Professional range
  • The lid hinge is the weak point on tins at this price

What it is like to live with

The single most useful thing to know when buying paint as a gift: pigment or dye. Cheap sets at half this price use dye, which looks fine alone and goes grey the moment two colours meet. That failure is invariably blamed by the beginner on themselves.

Add a pad of cold-press paper and the gift is complete at around $57. Without paper it is an incomplete present, and cheap copier paper will buckle and ruin the first attempt — which is exactly the moment a new hobby gets abandoned.
