The verdict
Sony cancels marginally more noise and lasts 40 hours to Bose’s 24. Bose builds the better headband, the gentler clamp and the more balanced sound, and over a long flight or a working day that is the difference people actually feel. For an older recipient, or anyone in glasses, comfort is the round that decides it.
What we liked
- The more comfortable headband and clamp of the two flagships
- More balanced, less bass-forward sound — better for classical and speech
- Market-leading noise cancelling, very close to Sony
- Physical controls rather than pure touch gestures

What it is like to live with
Both flagships cancel noise better than almost anything else sold, and the specification gap between them is smaller than the marketing suggests. What separates them in daily use is comfort, and Bose has held that advantage for years.
For the readers of this site that matters more than the numbers. Someone wearing headphones over glasses for three hours will notice the clamp long before they notice a marginal difference in low-frequency cancellation, and a pair that is uncomfortable is a pair that stays in the drawer.
