Quince Merino Wool & Cashmere Throw review

Quince

Merino and cashmere at roughly a third of what the Scottish mills charge for the same blend.

The verdict

The blend is the point: merino for structure, cashmere for the hand, which gives you warmth without the limpness of pure cashmere at this price. Quince sells direct and prices accordingly — a comparable Johnstons of Elgin throw costs several times more. You are trading provenance and mill heritage for the same fibres, and for a gift that is usually the right trade.

What we liked

  • Merino and cashmere blend rather than acrylic padding
  • Direct-to-consumer pricing well below the Scottish mills
  • Large enough for two people on a sofa
  • No fastenings or sizing to get wrong

What we did not

  • Cool wash and flat dry — not a machine-and-forget item
  • All natural-fibre throws pill at friction points eventually
  • Colour range is narrower than the heritage brands

What it is like to live with

The throw is the safest gift on this site, and the only real decision is fibre. Acrylic is warm and feels wrong within a fortnight. Pure cashmere feels extraordinary and goes limp. A merino-cashmere blend sits between the two and is what most of the good throws use.

What Quince has done is remove the markup rather than change the specification. If provenance matters to the recipient — a mill name, a Scottish label — buy Johnstons of Elgin and pay several times more for genuinely the same fibres woven somewhere with a longer history. If the recipient just wants to be warm on a sofa, this is the better purchase.
