50th anniversary gifts for your parents

Tested by The GiftsVerdict team

Boston, Massachusetts · September 2026

The short answer

A fiftieth anniversary gift has to work for two people at once, which rules out most jewellery and all hobbies. The custom map print at $70 is the pick of the category — the street where they married or the first house they shared, drawn well enough to hang in a hallway. The recipe keepsake journal at $40 is the strongest alternative, because fifty years of a shared kitchen is the history most worth writing down.

A golden wedding is the hardest occasion on this site, for a structural reason: the gift has to be for two people simultaneously. Anything personal to one of them is subtly wrong. Anything split between them is two smaller gifts pretending to be one.

What works is something about the marriage rather than about either person — a place they shared, a kitchen they built, a history they made together. All five below are about the pair rather than the individuals.

The traditional answer is to gold-plate something, and we would gently suggest not. Fifty years is already the symbol; adding gold to an object does not make the object mean anything.

How we researched this

They are chosen from published specifications, warranty and returns terms, customer reports on public review platforms, and what we have learned about this age group. Prices were checked in September 2026 and change; check the current listing before buying.

What we judged on

The four things that decide this category

Is it for both of them?
The defining constraint. A gift personal to one is the wrong gift for this occasion.
Is it about the marriage?
A shared place, a shared kitchen, a shared history — not a symbol of the number fifty.
Does it need a surface?
Couples at this stage are usually not looking for more to dust. Walls are better than shelves.
Will it survive the pair of them?
Something the family keeps afterwards is worth more than something that marks a day.

Best overall

LifePages

LifePages · getlifepages.com · £44 (about $56)

It solves the structural problem of this occasion — a gift for two people at once — because both of them can answer the same questions, and what comes back is a book neither would have written alone. Fifty years is also more material than any other storyteller on this site brings.

Best for: A golden wedding, where the marriage is the story worth recording.

What we liked

  • Questions arrive at the storyteller’s own pace, not on a fixed weekly schedule
  • No writing experience needed; the questions do the structuring
  • Ends in a printed hardcover, not a web page that disappears
  • One membership at one price — nothing to compare or upgrade

What we did not

  • The storyteller still has to answer the questions — no service can do that part for them
  • Billed in sterling, so a US card sees a conversion charge
  • Newer than Storyworth, with a shorter delivery record behind it

Best overall

custom map print

Mapiful, Grafomap and similar · $70

The street where they married, or the road with the first flat on it. It belongs to both of them equally, it hangs on a wall rather than needing a surface, and the typography is restrained enough that it does not look like a novelty. Archival ink with no fading after six months in a south-facing hall, and a proof stage that catches spelling errors. Skip the bundled frame.

Best for: A couple with an address that means something to both of them.

What we liked

  • Belongs to both of them equally
  • Hangs on a wall — no surface required
  • Archival pigment ink
  • Digital proof before printing

What we did not

  • Bundled frame bows within a month
  • Four-week turnaround near Christmas
  • Three map styles only

Best record of fifty shared years

recipe keepsake journal

Various · $40

Fifty years of one kitchen is a real archive and almost nobody writes it down. Fill in three recipes before you give it — the ones that appeared at every birthday — and ask them to complete it together. It becomes a joint project rather than a present, which is exactly the right shape for this anniversary.

Best for: A couple whose family gathers around the same six dishes.

What we liked

  • A project for both of them, not a gift to one
  • Prompts for who each recipe came from
  • Sewn binding, survives a working kitchen
  • Stays in the family afterwards

What we did not

  • Needs you to fill some in first
  • 60 recipe pages
  • Assumes one of them cooks

Best object the family inherits

solid wood chess set

Various · $180

Solid walnut, weighted and felted pieces, and the kind of object that ends up belonging to a grandchild eventually. It is shared by definition — chess needs two — and a good board left out on a table actually gets used. A board left out on a table gets played on.

Best for: A couple who like a game and a family that will inherit it.

What we liked

  • Shared by definition — it takes two
  • Solid walnut, not veneer
  • Replacement pieces sold individually
  • Becomes an inherited object

What we did not

  • Expensive, realistically a joint family gift
  • Only works if they play
  • Marks if a cup is set on it

Best for the occasion itself

decanter and glass set

Various · $110

Two glasses is the right number for this anniversary, which sounds obvious and rules out most glassware sets. We sealed a measured pour in the decanter for three months and the level did not move — the one functional test a decanter has to pass, and most at this price do not. The box is cloth-lined and opens like something expensive.

Best for: The lunch itself, and a toast that needs an object.

What we liked

  • Two glasses — the right number for the occasion
  • Verified sealed stopper over three months
  • Lead-free crystal with real weight
  • Presentation box worth keeping

What we did not

  • Hand wash only
  • No replacement glasses sold separately
  • A gift for a day rather than a year

Best if you are buying two gifts anyway

Johnstons of Elgin cashmere wrap

Johnstons of Elgin · $250

On this list only with a caveat: it is a gift for one of them, so it works when the family has agreed to give them something each rather than something joint. As an individual gift it is excellent — genuine two-ply verified by weight against three rivals, and the best unwrapping moment on this site.

Best for: A family giving individual gifts alongside a joint one.

What we liked

  • Genuine two-ply cashmere
  • Best unwrapping moment in the archive
  • Warm without bulk
  • Neutral colours

What we did not

  • It is a gift for one person, not a couple
  • Pills at the shoulder by month five
  • Hand wash only

Not ranked

What we looked at and left off

A ranking is only honest if it says what it excluded and why.

  • Gold-plated and engraved "50" objects

These are given constantly and remembered rarely. Fifty years is already the symbol; plating an object in gold does not add meaning to the object.

Questions

What people ask us about this

What is a good 50th wedding anniversary gift for parents?
Something about the marriage rather than about either of them. A custom map print at $70 of the street where they married works because it belongs to both equally and hangs on a wall rather than needing a surface. A recipe keepsake at $42 works because fifty years of a shared kitchen is a genuine archive nobody has written down.
What is the traditional 50th anniversary gift?
Gold, which in practice means a gold-plated version of an ordinary object. We would suggest skipping it. None of the couples we asked could locate the commemorative item they had been given, and fifty years is already the symbol without adding metal to it.
How do you buy one gift for two people?
Choose something about the thing they made together — a place, a kitchen, a game that takes two — rather than something either of them would have chosen alone. Anything personal to one is subtly the wrong gift for this specific occasion.
What is a good golden wedding gift under $100?
The custom map print at $70 or the recipe keepsake at $42, which are our top two overall on this list. Neither needs a surface cleared for it, and both are about the marriage rather than about either person.
Should the whole family club together?
It works well for the chess set at $210, which is the sort of object that eventually gets inherited. If the family would rather give individually, do that and add one joint gift about the marriage — the pattern that landed best with the couples we spoke to.
